Traditional PBX with ISDN2e/30e

Enabling Traditional PBX with ISDN2e/30e for SIP Trunks

Many organizations are reluctant to replace their existing PBX because switching to IP-PBX can be expensive. The approach described below provides an excellent conversion strategy with a controlled budget.

Companies who have a traditional PBX systems can become compliant and deploy SIP using their existing PBX. Most businesses underestimate how much of their existing infrastructure can be used and all that is required is a few alterations/additions.

If your equipment is functioning perfectly then an ISDN based PBX hardware can work with SIP trunks by using gateways to the IP network. This means you don’t have buy an IP based PBX system immediately. This will only be required when your current PBX reaches its end of life.

How does it Work?

When a user wants to make an outbound call, it will be first handled by the legacy PBX that routes the call to the trunks connected to the SIP gateway also located at the company premises. This SIP gateway will convert the ISDN signal to IP signal. This signal will flow over the IP network, usually the public Internet, to our SIP trunk network which can route and terminate calls directed to any PSTN number. Inbound calls follow the exact opposite direction.
